Max Conrad had an active interest in music from an early age. Starting at age eight, over the span of many years he taught himself to play the harmonica, guitar, mandolin, banjo, violin, saxophone, and clarinet.  In college and as a young adult he played in bands.  Max used songwriting as a method to regain  language skills lost after suffering brain damage in the propeller accident.  Songs were made into sheet music and records to help finance his long-distance flights.

A copy of the speech Max gave to gave to the Aero Club of Holland on May 18, 1961. This is on the inside cover of the Let's Fly album.

Listen to "My Cabin Window" (1.4 mb mp3)

Max wrote "My Cabin Window" while living in the children’s playhouse, the house had been rented while the family lived in Switzerland. This was the cabin he referred to in the song, not the cabin of an airplane. He would put himself to sleep playing the harmonica looking out the cabin window. He wrote another song "It’s True" and had records made of those songs. The music was painted on the sides of the small plane he flew to Rome.
